A brief history of Rolex

Rolex began in London in 1905, when Hans Wilsdorf established the business that would grow into the brand. The Rolex name was registered in 1908, and the Oyster case introduced in 1926 became an important part of its identity. Those early developments help explain the brand’s enduring emphasis on practical wristwatches and dependable timekeeping.

For a pre-owned buyer, that long history offers very different generations to explore. Compare the exact reference and the individual watch rather than assuming an older example shares the specifications of a modern one. Case proportions, dial details and documented condition make the heritage more meaningful than the name alone.

Choosing the right Rolex

Similar-looking Rolex watches can differ in generation, movement, bracelet and dial configuration. Consider how you will wear the watch, then compare the specific examples within your budget. For older watches, ask about known replacement parts, polishing and documented servicing rather than assuming that age or appearance confirms originality.

Questions before buying

What should I look for when buying a vintage Rolex?

Start with the reference and the evidence for the watch’s age. Ask about known replacement dials, hands, bezels and bracelets, and review photographs of the case and clasp. Service work and polishing can affect how an older example presents. A date on a document may relate to a sale or service rather than manufacture, so ask how the stated age was established. Choose the individual watch for its condition and suitability, rather than assuming that “vintage” guarantees originality or future value.

What should I check on a pre-owned Rolex?

Review the case, bezel, dial, hands, bracelet and clasp in the photographs. Confirm the reference, measurements and bracelet fit, and ask about any known service work or replacement components. Our pre-owned watch buying guide provides a fuller checklist.

Does every Rolex include its original box and papers?

No. Accompanying items depend on the individual watch. Check exactly which box, warranty card or certificate, manuals, service invoices and spare links are supplied. Documents are useful context, but they do not establish authenticity on their own.

Can I view a Rolex watch in Birmingham?

Yes. Arrange a Birmingham viewing and confirm the watch is available before travelling. Visit by appointment Monday–Saturday, 10am–4pm, at Second Floor, 27 Warstone Lane, Birmingham, B18 6JQ.

Ask about current water-use suitability and any recent pressure-test information before exposing a pre-owned watch to water. We offer insured UK delivery and a 12-month mechanical warranty, subject to our delivery and returns terms and warranty terms.
