Pre-Owned Luxury Watch Buying Guide
Choosing a pre-owned luxury watch starts with finding the right watch for your wrist, lifestyle and budget. The individual example matters: its condition, reference, accompanying items and service history can be as important as the brand name.
This buying guide from Executive Watch Collection explains what to look for before ordering online or arranging a viewing at our Birmingham Jewellery Quarter office. Established in 2018, we buy and sell pre-owned luxury watches and can answer questions about the particular watch you are considering.
Choose a watch that suits how you will wear it
Think about whether you want an everyday watch, a dress watch or something for occasional wear. Consider comfort, legibility, bracelet or strap preference and the functions you will actually use. Set a budget that leaves room for future maintenance.
Start with a brand you enjoy, then compare individual listings. A reference number identifies a particular version of a watch and helps you check its specifications. Similar-looking watches may differ in size, material, movement or dial configuration.
Explore our pre-owned Rolex watches, Cartier watches, Omega watches, Patek Philippe watches and Audemars Piguet watches, or browse all watch brands. Our new arrivals collection shows the latest listings; check each product page for availability.
Understand the condition of the individual watch
Condition descriptions are a starting point. Look at the photographs and ask about anything that is important to you, particularly marks that may be difficult to see in a single image.
- Case and bezel: inspect visible scratches, dents, edges and surface finishing.
- Dial, hands and crystal: check their appearance and ask about damage, ageing or known replacements.
- Bracelet and clasp: ask about wear, fit and the number of supplied links.
- Strap: consider its condition, length and whether it is original or a replacement.
- Polishing: ask whether the watch is known to have been polished. A clean appearance alone does not establish that a watch is unpolished.
With older watches, age-related changes and replacement parts need to be understood in context. If originality matters to you, ask what is known about the dial, hands, bezel, bracelet and service history. We can discuss the information available for the specific listing.
What do box and papers tell you?
Box generally refers to the presentation box supplied with a watch. Papers may mean an original warranty card or certificate; manuals and service invoices are separate items. Ask exactly what is included, because the contents described as a “full set” can vary.
Check whether accompanying documents relate to the watch being sold and what any stated year represents. A dated warranty card may record the original sale date rather than the manufacturing year.
Box and papers add useful context, but they do not establish authenticity on their own. Their absence does not automatically make a watch counterfeit. The watch itself still needs to be assessed, and any uncertainty should be discussed before purchase.
Executive Watch Collection guarantees the authenticity of the watches we sell. Read our Warranty & Authenticity policy for the full terms and ask us about the accompanying items shown in an individual listing.
Choose a size that feels comfortable
Case diameter is useful, but it is only one part of how a watch wears. Also consider case thickness, the distance between the ends of the lugs, case shape and bracelet or strap fit. Two watches with the same quoted diameter can feel quite different on the wrist.
Measure your wrist and compare the dimensions with a watch you already find comfortable. For a bracelet watch, check the supplied links and whether it can be adjusted to your wrist size. For a strap watch, ask about its length and fastening.
If you are unsure, arrange a Birmingham viewing to try the watch on before making your decision.
Understand the movement and maintenance
A quartz watch typically uses a battery. A manually wound mechanical watch is wound by hand, while an automatic mechanical watch uses wrist movement to help wind its mainspring and may also allow manual winding. Follow the instructions for the particular model when winding or setting it.
Ask whether service history is documented, when any recorded service took place and what work was done. A watch described as running is not necessarily recently serviced. Maintenance intervals and operating instructions vary by manufacturer and model.
For water use, ask about the watch’s current suitability and any recent pressure-test information. A model’s original water-resistance specification should not be treated as confirmation of the present condition of a pre-owned example. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and obtain appropriate advice before exposing it to water.
Your before-you-buy checklist
- Confirm the full model and reference, case dimensions and material.
- Review the condition description and request additional photographs if needed.
- Confirm exactly which box, documents, accessories and bracelet links are included.
- Ask about known replacement parts, polishing and documented servicing.
- Check availability, delivery arrangements, warranty terms and the returns policy.
- Keep your order confirmation, invoice and accompanying documentation.

Frequently asked questions
Should I only buy a watch with box and papers?
That depends on your preferences. Confirm what is included and consider the watch’s condition and authenticity assessment alongside its accompanying items. Box and papers are useful context, but they are not a substitute for examining the watch.
Is a larger watch always better for a larger wrist?
There is no single correct size. Case shape, thickness and bracelet or strap fit all affect comfort. Compare dimensions and try the watch on where possible.
Does every pre-owned watch have a known service history?
No. Ask what records are available for the watch you are considering. Missing records should be treated as unknown history, rather than evidence that a service has or has not taken place.
Can I view a watch before buying?
Yes. Contact us to arrange an appointment at our Birmingham Jewellery Quarter office and confirm that the watch is available for viewing.
